CEDO's research mission is to advance and share knowledge about the Northern Gulf of California and surrounding Sonoran Desert. CEDO's long term research and monitoring projects are making important contributions to our understanding of the region. They are providing vital data to help develop conservation solutions to preserve the natural resources of the area. Ongoing projects include:

ESSENTIAL HABITATS: CEDO's research program is focused on essential habitats, rocky habitats & coastal wetlandsin the Northern Gulf.We are interested in characterizing the functions and environmental services of these habitats.

WEATHER DATA: CEDO has been taking climate data for over 20 years and has a data archive since 1964 accumulated by the University of Arizona. This data set sheds light on climate patterns in the upper Gulf of California and may help us understand global climate change. Since August 2005, CEDO has posted monthly climatological summaries of conditions in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. We also post  current weather conditions in Puerto Peñasco. The information on this website is updated every 10 minutes.

REGIONAL BIODIVERSITY: CEDO has a collection of marine and terrestrial specimens collected in the Northern Gulf since the 1970's

SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES: CEDO has been working with the fishing communities of the region for over 20 years, providing support, information and leadership to find sustainable techniques to ensure the long term health of this industry.

Additionally, CEDO works to train the next generation of scientist that will tackle the Gulf of California's environmental challenges. E-mail us about research internships, senior thesis, and volunteer opportunities.

OTHER RESEARCH PROJECTS IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA:

Sustainable Seafood Program: This program of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson AZ aims to help consumers understand and recognize unsustainable and environmentally destructive seafood harvesting, and to encourage people to purchase sustainable seafood in restaurants and markets, with a special focus on seafood from the Gulf of California.
