Thirty miles north of CEDO lies the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. Characterized by rugged lava flows, dormant volcanoes and giant craters, this region of wind-swept dunes and cholla forests is inhabited by bighorn sheep and the Sonoran pronghorn antelope. The spiritual and cultural traditions of the O'odham, or desert people, have been centered in this area for generations. Mining, extraction of native plants and archaeological treasures, agriculture and cattle-grazing, as well as the explosion of tourist activities in the region, are the main threats to the environmental integrity of this region. |
