Sea Lion Monitoring Produces Important Results
In July, local residents and representatives
from several conservation groups joined CEDO in a "cruise-course" to
learn safe and humane techniques for monitoring and surveying sea lion
colonies. The boat took the group to several islands in the Upper Gulf,
where they observed 8 different sea lion colonies, collected specimens
for study, and recorded population and habitat health indicators. Read more about these efforts to develop standardized monitoring techniques in protected natural areas.

Staff profile - Marlene Anaid Luquin Covarrubias
Originally
coming to CEDO in January 2009 as a volunteer, Marlene quickly earned
the respect of her co-workers. In September of that year, she joined
the staff of the fisheries division.
Concentrating on the
geoduck clam fishery, Marlene uses her education, talents and personal
dedication to sustainable use of natural resources to inspire everyone
around her. She envisions a world where natural resources are used with
respect and care, providing economic stability to local communities
while protecting the health and well-being of the environment. Working
closely with four geoduck Cooperatives with permit to harvest in the
Puerto Peñasco area, Marlene is making a difference every day. Find out more about Marlene here!
Sea Lions Thrive in Northern Gulf
The Gulf of California supports large
populations of marine mammals, including many thousands of California
sea lions. The presence of great numbers of these large predators is a
good indication of the relative abundance - and health - of this marine
ecosystem. These large animals need lots of food - and the Gulf provides
it! Read more about the California Sea Lion here.

Youth put their Environmental Contest Projects into Practice
Youth from several coastal communities of the Northern Sea of Cortez participated in the 17th Annual Environmental Contest. The purpose of the contest is to help our future leaders,
businesspersons and community members learn how to work together to find
solutions to the challenges they face in creating sustainable
fisheries, a healthy seafood industry and a prosperous tourist trade
without destroying the beauty and abundance of their natural
surroundings.
To that end, each youth team chose a fishery to
evaluate its future. Interviewing current fishers and learning about
the environmental as well as economic impact of that fishery, student
teams then proposed creative and bold steps to maintain and develop
sustainable growth for that fishery. These projects have tangible and
"real life" outcomes, as the participants in the contest will be the
practitioners of tomorrow. Read the project report here.

The
Contest has become a staple in the education of young people of the
area, with businesses, educators, community members and tourists all
benefitting from the event. Read more about the winning teams' projects here.
