CEDO E-Newsletter November 2011 - CEDO Plans for Challenges Ahead
During Veterans' Day weekend, CEDO launched a strategic planning process, facilitated by world-renowned consultants, DAI. Visioning our organization in 2020, Board members, staff, funders and other stakeholders met in Rocky Point to help direct activities and resources efficiently and effectively.
Puerto Penasco is a perfect setting for you this winter! There's no better place to enjoy the beach at this time of year. And of course, CEDO offers ecotours, shopping opportunities, nature talks and library facilities for visitors to our Field Station. Check us out!!

CEDO Comments on CDF Power Project

Power transfer lines are needed to improve electrical access for communities somewhere, but is it necessary to install those power poles through Natural Protected Areas? Read more here to learn about the project and the comments CEDO has submitted to the review committee.
Staff profile - Christian Chavez
Christian has spent most of his adult life researching the micro-biology of marine larval shrimp, yeast decay on Mexican lemons and mangrove cockles. Such intense lab research is a stark contrast to the work he does these days, sitting aboard pangas, training boat operators and fishermen on self-monitoring and data collection techniques, helping them implement sound sustainable fishing practices in the waters of the Sea of Cortez. Read more about Christian here.
Totoaba: the First Commercial Fish on the Endangered Species List
Once abundant in the Northern Gulf of California, the totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) was fished nearly to extinction. Both Mexico and the United States placed protective restrictions in the 1970's on the taking of this fish, endemic to the Gulf, in order to help increase its numbers to a more healthy, sustainable population.
The totoaba may live 25 years or more, growing to six feet in length and over 250 pounds. With proper adherence to management practices, the totoaba may some day again become an important commercial fish for markets throughout the world. Learn more here!
