30th Anniversary Tide Bits: Totoaba

This critically endangered and endemic fish faces the threats of both habitat loss and direct mortality in fishermen's nets. Totoabas depend on the brackish water in the delta of the Colorado River to reproduce. Populations have suffered since water use in the western United States has reduced the river's flow to 4% of its former level. In the middle of the last century the totoaba's population was decimated due to overfishing, so much so that in 1975 it was the first marine fish to be listed as endangered. Totoaba can grow up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) in length and weigh up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds). Even though it is illegal to fish for totoaba they are still fished for commercial purposes and caught as bycatch (unwanted and untargeted marine animals caught while fishing for other animals, such as shrimp).
