Conservation and Research

CEDO’s research, conservation and education programs meet our mission through dynamic and complementary projects, which engage a wide variety of stakeholders. Our programs share a commitment to sustainability, sound science, local decision making and capacity building. We benefit from collaborations across our program areas, from wetland research conducted by teens in the ecology club to fishermen petitioning against development in Cholla Bay.

Sustainable Fisheries
We work to integrate sound science with community participation for sustainable fisheries.

Coastal Conservation
We bring together community, government and other environmental organizations to achieve sustainable use of natural resources.

Wetland Research
Our long-term research and monitoring projects focus on wetlands and rocky reefs, and are making important contributions to our understanding of the region.

Community Education
We engage people of all ages in diverse educational activities, scientific research and action for conservation.

30th Anniversary Tide Bits: Least Terns

Least terns, a protected marine bird in Mexico, use the wetlands of the Northern Gulf of California as breeding areas. These diminutive birds, weighing only 40 grams, select barrier beaches, peninsulas and spits to lay eggs and rear young. A colonial species, least terns depend on the presence of other pairs to help defend the nests, which are laid directly onto the sand. Least terns migrate from Peru to the Puerto Peñasco region in April through August each year. A good place to go Tern watching during this time is Estero Morúa, an ecologically vital estuary south of CEDO, and home to many of NaturArte (our ecotourism project) partners.
