Our 2009 camp was a huge success! Seventeen campers joined us at the CEDO field station for five days of adventure and learning. This year's camp was especially unique, as eight Americans were joined by nine students from a local Puerto Peñasco, Sonora school, making the camp an intercultural exchange in addition to an exploration of the ecology of the Northern Gulf. This contributed greatly to the flow and atmosphere of the camp, especially adding an extra level of intensity while students discussed the camp's theme, the conservation of the vaquita, as the issue is unique to Mexico. The vaquita is a marine porpoise endemic to Mexico and the Northern Gulf of California, and the world’s most endangered marine mammal.

In addition to visits to Isla San Jorge, the intertidal zone and estuary, campers divided into teams representing the different stakeholders in the vaquita situation and explored the complexities and intricacies of making a conservation plan. They discussed and debated the different viewpoints of each group and finally reached a compromise to make a conservation plan which took into account the needs of all involved. We were all extremely impressed by the enthusiasm and intelligence of the campers and by their ability to understand this delicate and very complicated issue. Everyone involved in the camp had a great time and enjoyed a super, fun-filled week! It is our hope that this experience will remain with the campers in wherever they go in the future.

Information on CEDO's 2010 Wet Feet Ocean Camp

S
ummer has an adventure in store for you: an adventure in marine biology! CEDO will be holding Wet Feet Ocean Camp, an overnight summer camp for youth ages 10 - 13. For five days and four nights children will explore the Upper Gulf of California intertidal zone and surrounding Sonoran Desert. Accommodation will be provided at the CEDO field station in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico. The camp will be held June 24 - 28 in English, and July 12 - 16 in Spanish. The cost is $415, with an optional $100 island cruise to Isla San Jorge. We ask you to make a $100 reservation deposit for each child attending the camp.

Campers will explore the marine biology of the Upper Gulf of California through both field study and hands-on activities. Uncovering brittle stars, nudibranchs, and octopi in the intertidal zone, dancing for shrimp in the estuary, and discovering the secrets of different marine organisms that live in this biologically rich area are only a few of the activities in which the campers will participate.
