Nov. 7th Pinacate book signing event and visit
to El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve
A visit to Puerto Peñasco is not complete without a trip to the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, an impressive landscape featuring a huge shield volcano, unique Maar craters, lava flows and cinder cones. The beautiful new book, "Land of Black Volcanoes and White Sands: the Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve," contains color photographs and detailed information about the biology and history of the Pinacate. Don’t miss CEDO’s upcoming book signing and talk about this magnificent region with the authors, Larry G. Marshall and Clark Blake. The event will take place at CEDO's field station on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10am, so come and get your book signed! To order a copy of the book now, visit our online Eco Shop.
After the book signing CEDO is offering a special eco-adventure to the Pinacate dunes and new visitor's center for the Biosphere Reserve, beginning at 1pm. Witness this magnificent area with your own eyes. The cost is $40, which includes lunch if you pre-register by Nov. 6. To pre-register call CEDO at 520-320-5473 or email

If you're unable to join us for this special excursion to the Pinacate (or the scheduled eco-adventure on October 24th, see the Upcoming Eco-Adventures section below), CEDO offers eco-adventures to the area at your convenience. Two different tours are available: the first is to hike the Gran Desierto Dune system and visit the new Pinacate visitor's center, or join us on a driving tour of the very impressive craters and lava flows located in the reserve. CEDO Wins Environmental Merit Award
On June 5, in a ceremony to commemorate World Environment Day, CEDO
received the Award of Ecological Merit (el
Premio al Mérito Ecológico) from the president of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources
(SEMARNAT). CEDO was selected as a winner in the non-formal
environmental education category, in recognition of all the education
projects CEDO has undertaken and lead for nearly 30 years. This is a
huge honor, so thank you to everyone who has been involved with CEDO
and its education programs over the years.

Since 1993, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources
(SEMARNAT) has granted the Award of Ecological Merit (PME) for individuals,
institutions and organizations that have made significant contributions and actions to the environment, thus contributing to the sustainable development of Mexico.
In the ceremony, Peggy Turk Boyer, CEDO's Executive Director, and Paloma Valdivia, CEDO's Environmental Education Coordiantor, received the PME from the president of Mexico, Felipe Calderón. CEDO, along with 5 other winners, received a diploma, a
presea and the amount of $ 75,000.00 MN, to continue with our
educational projects.
CEDO's educational programs have served the conservation needs in the Northern Gulf region and have tried to develop models of
sustainable development. These projects have involved all kinds of actors, from students, teachers, fishermen and oyster cooperatives, among others.
Our annual environmental contests and the screening of eco-adventure
and environmental films are just two examples of the programs currently
undertaken by CEDO to enhance the appreciation of local natural
resources among the people of Puerto Peñasco and other coastal
communities.

Also our educational program supports a
print and video library, botanical garden, fin whale
skeleton, environmental exhibits and an Earthship made of tires and aluminum
cans. Further, CEDO prompted the formation of the Biosphere
Reserves of the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta, and the
Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar, and developed the educational
component of their management plans. All these programs and events, spanning almost 30 years, has earned CEDO this distinguished
recognition at a national level, as being an organization committed to
conservation and community.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
